/>

Since some days, my PC has been having a bad time with multitasking.
For instance if I am working on word files or playing some simple youtube videos, or some IDE development, my PC used to stall for half a minute, keep everything hanging up and come back to normal state as if taking a deeeep deeep breath.
It used to be my break for checking my twitter feed on my cell. ;D

Today I decided to go to the root of this problem.
As an old time windows troubleshooter, I did the usuals.
Removed unused programs, did some msconfig tweaks and some registry cleaning.

But, the issue persisted.
This is what my task manager had to show.

It showed more processes than the tabs opened.
This was unusual because there were only 3 chrome windows open and hardly 10 open tabs altogether; one playing youtube (Rich content) rest all were light websites.
Turned out that the extensions were majorly hogging my memory.

This is what I stumbled upon trying to solve this problem:

Unlike most current web browsers, Google Chrome uses many operating system processes to keep web sites separate from each other and from the rest of your computer.

There is a main process which chrome runs.
It handles the UI, tab management and other stuff.

Then come the subordinate processes:

The Renderer processes handles rendering of the page.
Usually, each tab consumes one renderer process. But some sometimes same domain uses same renderer (upto 20 tabs). Renderer process runs in a sandbox that can increase security by separating in sandboxes.
When one renderer crashes, other tabs or the main process will not be affected, and users will be able to reload the page by refreshing.

Plugin Processes: Plugins such as Flash, Quicktime, or Adobe Reader have higher priority than a webpage.
Also to keep Renderer processes in the sandbox, plugins are given separate memory.
When one plugin crashes, other plugins or tabs or the main process will not be affected.

Extension Processes:
As in the plugin processes, separating extensions into processes is to keep them in sandbox.
Similarly a crashing extension will not take the whole browser down.

Solution if you are stuck up:

Just go to chrome’s very own task manager (esc+shift).

End tabs and extensions hogging ur memory. It will flush the memory.
Don’t worry about losing tab content, your URL will be intact which you can reload later.

I had made comparisons with firefox too, which uses singular processes.
But being a die hard chrome fan, I will keep mum. After watching the F8 keynote and the 90% twitter folk tweeting abt it, I had to reactivate it; just to check out the stuff.

Honestly when I logged on to my account I was greeted by heaps of notifications and unexpected messages.
Also Ticker was running on the right side of the browser, which literally reminded me of stock exchange tickers. (I guess it was the inspiration for FB ticker in the first place.)

I use beautify facebook chrome app, because it allows me to customize my background, block ads and hide annoying game invitations.
But today, it was mess all over the place, I guess Beautify facebook team weren’t expecting such a major overhaul.
With active content spilling form everywhere, it was TIME SQUARE on my facebook Broadway.

After playing around it, Zuck has managed to find ways to bind us even more tightly to facebook.
If I continue facebooking I will surely spend additional 50% on this site with the ticker and spotify notifictaions.

With slew of offerings like social plugins, opengraph improvements and timeline, it was mindboggling for developers and end users alike.

At first sight,I was genuinely impressed by the timeline feature.I like to keep the blog posts short so I will only go on abt this topic, that too n brief.

Go through this gallery and see the attached comments.

My Time Line Snap. Though I’m new to the gig, I can see similarities between this role and leadership roles I’ve had at church. Sure, some enterprise architects are zealots about what they do and what they believe in, but the real similarity comes in leading volunteers when you have no direct control or authority over them. For this reason, when people ask me what’s the best way to get experience as a CIO, I always suggest that they volunteer for leadership in the Information Technology programs at their church or community.

The true mark of successful leadership shows when people are able to gain followers over whom they have no leverage. CIOs often find themselves responsible and accountable for things over which they have no control. This is why there is often so much talk about what CIOs have “control” over. But, this isn’t unusual in technical and professional jobs. John Kotter confirms in Power and Influence that:

“Most of the power gap one finds in professional and technical jobs is associated with relationships outside the formal chain of command.”

The skills that one acquires to get results outside of their direct authority or chain of command are critical for getting desired business outcomes. John C. Maxwell in his book The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership: Follow Them and People Will Follow You, he advises CEO’s to look for the best leaders in those that have successfully led volunteer organizations for at least six months. He tells us that:

Followers in voluntary organizations cannot be forced to get on board. If the leader has no influence with them, then they won’t follow

While serving in my church’s IT Ministry, I found that if you can get a bunch of set-in-their-ways Baptist deacons and trustees to migrate to a new church membership system, you can implement an enterprise resource planning system. In this case, I had to convince them that it would be Divine Will that we upgrade to a more modern system else we burn in the eternal hell of non-Y2K compliance. It worked and we modernized our old church membership system.

Another similar aspect is the need for a Ten Commandments or enterprise architecture. The importance of enterprise architecture is that in its most useful form, it defines a clear, unambiguous set of principles that guide IT decisions in an organization. Architecture you can use is not reams and volumes of useless dogma. It looks something like this:

· Thou shall consider cloud computing solutions first before buying a dedicated infrastructure for your application.
· Thou shall not bare false witness to other IT investments and demonstrate value producing desired outcomes consistent with your business case else you risk termination and eternal damnation.
· Thou shall run securely and not make wrongful use of any data entrusted to you so that thy days may be long.

And finally, people want to have hope for tomorrow and vision for a better future. My grandmother used to say that everyone wants to go to heaven, but no one wants to die. That means that we often want benefits without making a commensurate sacrifice. In IT speak, that means we want to reduce the cost of what we spend on IT, but we don’t want to sacrifice value of the services and capabilities we get. But in order to get to IT heaven, we need to die to duplicative infrastructures and “one-off” spending and believe in economies of scale and shared services.

Of course an enterprise resource planning system is much more complex than a church membership product and an agency Web portal has more multifaceted considerations compared to a homeowner’s association newsletter, but the foundational leadership skills are the same. These skills allow leaders to bring people together over whom they have no authority and align them along a common set of principles or beliefs by building a sense of community. Leaders at all levels have to have these capabilities in order to turn vision, hope, and dreams into reality. ”

You can find the complete article over here : <a
